Understanding Differences Between Report UI and Excel Values

Learn why report values in DealPOS may differ slightly from Excel exports due to differences in decimal precision during calculation.

Written by Christian Wijaya

Have you ever noticed a slight difference between the values displayed in the DealPOS Report (ex: Report - Detail) and the exported Excel file? This difference can occur due to different levels of decimal precision used during calculations. DealPOS stores transaction values with up to 4 decimal places, while Excel can process numbers with higher precision.

As a result, the Sales or Tax values in the Excel export may have a small difference compared to the values shown in the Report UI, especially for transactions using Tax Include.

This article explains the reason behind these differences and provides an example to help you understand the calculation differences between the DealPOS Report UI and Excel Export.

Example of Sales Value Difference

For example, the following value is shown in the DealPOS Report - Detail (UI):

dealpos-report

Sales: 99,639,871.5311

When the same data is opened in Excel, the value can be displayed with additional decimal places:

dealpos-report exported

Sales: 99,639,871.5315998

As you can see, both values represent the same sales data, but Excel retains more decimal places during the calculation.

The difference in this example is very small. However, when the report contains many transactions, these small differences can accumulate and result in a more noticeable difference in the final total.

Why Does Tax Include Make the Difference More Noticeable?

The difference can be more noticeable when a transaction uses Tax Include. When Tax Include is enabled, the tax amount needs to be separated from the total selling price. This calculation can produce values with more than four decimal places.

For example, the calculation may result in a value such as:

10,958,185.868956...

DealPOS stores the calculated value according to its supported decimal precision, while Excel can continue processing the additional decimal values. When multiple transactions are calculated and totaled, the difference from each transaction can accumulate.

Note: A small difference between the DealPOS Report and Excel Export does not necessarily indicate an error in the transaction data. It can be caused by the different decimal precision used during calculation.

Summary

The difference between the DealPOS Report UI and Excel Export values is caused by the different decimal precision used during calculations.

DealPOS stores transaction values with up to 4 decimal places, while Excel can process and retain values with higher precision. As a result, small differences may appear when comparing values, particularly for Sales and Tax calculations with Tax Include.

These differences are expected and do not necessarily indicate an issue with the transaction data.
